1080p vs 720p and YouTube

YouTube has come a long way since the days when 320x240 was the highest resolution the popular video sharing site could handle. As time went on, it evolved and adopted the widescreen aspect ratio, higher resolutions, and started piling on features for content creators to take advantage of. Now, you can upload and share videos all the way up to 1080p resolution. This begs the question, is 1080p really even necessary on a video streaming site? After 720p, does it size really matter?
